Basic Electrical Building Codes You NEED To Know

Basic Electrical Building Codes You NEED To Know | Lon Lockwood Electric

Whether you’re doing some work around your current home or building a brand new one from the ground up, you should have some knowledge of basic electrical codes. No, we’re not saying you need to understand all the ins and outs, but a little bit of knowledge goes a long way. In fact, there are separate codes for different rooms of the house – take a peek below to familiarize yourself:

Codes for the Kitchen

Let’s take a minute to think about all of the appliances you have in your kitchen. Have a number in mind? With that being considered, it’s no wonder the kitchen has specific electrical codes. Your larger appliances, like the dishwasher, refrigerator and garbage disposal, must have their own dedicated circuits. This will help prevent major electrical surges and eliminate the risk of serious damage.

Codes for the Bathrooms

Ever hear of a GFCI outlet? That’s short for ground fault circuit interrupter and these types of outlets are a MUST in all bathrooms, and anywhere else in the home that is subject to water. In addition, lights should have some sort of cover and lights and exhaust fans should have their own circuits.

Codes for the Rest of the House

  • Most fixtures in the house should be on a 15-amp circuit unless otherwise stated.
  • Lights on the ceiling should have a wall switch to power them on and off.
  • Each wall should have at least one outlet.
  • Closets can have an overhead light but it should contain a wall switch, not a pull chain.
  • Exterior lighting must be connected to a GFCI outlet and the wiring should be sealed or covered.
