How To Read Your Meter

How To Read Your Meter | Lon Lockwood Electric

Ever wonder what that big circular thing is on the outside of your home? If it’s located between the power lines coming from the pole and your electrical panel inside, that thing is your electrical meter and it’s used to record how much electricity you and your family members are using. Want to cut back on that amount and save on energy bills this year? One of the first steps is knowing how to read your meter.

If you have an older meter on your home, chances are it’s an analog meter. But if you have a newer home you may have a digital electrical meter, so we’re going to explain how to read both, below:

Analog Meters:

  1. Analog meters tend to have 6 dials and a circular disk that spins while you’re using electricity.
  2. Output is measured in kilowatt hours, or the amount of energy it would take to power a 100 watt light bulb for 10 hours.
  3. Read the numbers on each dial from left to right and don’t let the direction of the numbers confuse you. Some numbers read clockwise while others read counterclockwise.
  4. If the arrow is in between two numbers, the smaller number is the accurate reading.
  5. In order to keep track of the kilowatt hours you’ve used, you must record a starting reading and an ending reading. Electrical companies do not reset the meter back to zero after they take a reading.

Digital Meters:

  1. Most digital meters send readings to your electrical company without having a person come out to read the meter.
  2. You’ll notice a series of numbers on the meter where the exact configuration depends on the manufacturer.
  3. If you want to find out exactly how to read your meter and keep track of your kilowatt hours, give your local electrical company a call.
