Quick Fixes for Late-Season Ice Dams

Quick Fixes for Late-Season Ice Dams | Roof Heat Tape | Lon Lockwood Electric

It’s the first day of spring so it’s time to get outside and enjoy the nicer weather, right? Not so fast. Just because spring is here doesn’t mean temperatures skyrocket, and let’s face it, it’s still quite cold here in the Rochester area. In fact, temperatures are still hovering around the freezing mark which means your home may be subject to late-season ice dams. You can start by praying for warmer temperatures, but there are a few quick things you can do until your prayers are answered:

What Causes Ice Dams to Form?

Heat tends to collect in the attic (you know the saying, “heat rises”) which causes the most of your roof to warm up. However, the eaves are often “left out in the cold” as they are not typical heated by the air in the attic. When this happens, snow melts on the warmer sections of the roof and then refreezes as it gets down to the cold eaves. The result? Ice accumulates along the eaves forming a dam. As melted water continues to back up behind it, it can flow under the shingles and down into the house.

You may be tempted to get up on a ladder and start hacking away with a hammer or shovel, but please resist the urge. We also recommend staying away from throwing salt up there as all of these solutions can damage the roof or the areas around it. Do this instead:

  1. Blow cold air into the attic using a box fan. This will prevent some of the snow from melting and help freeze up the area where it’s actually leaking in.
  2. Use a rake to pull snow off of the roof. We suggest sticking to a plastic, long-handled rake or even one with wheels on it so you can stay planted on the ground and not cause any extra damage to your roof.
