Shocking Facts About Lightning

Shocking Facts About Lightning | Lon Lockwood Electric

How many times have you heard the saying, “April showers bring May flowers?” Probably too many to count, right? Well, while rain showers aren’t necessarily a problem, lightning that can come along with it is. On average, 51 people are killed each year as a result of lightning – so read below to find out how to keep yourself and your family safe this season:

Myth: Lightning only happens when it’s rainy or cloudy outside.

Fact: Any time you hear thunder, no matter what it looks like outside, lightning is nearby. In fact, lightning tends to strike over 10 miles away from the center of the storm.

Myth: You should never touch a person who has been struck because they carry a charge.

Fact: Because lightning travels so fast, roughly 220,000,000 miles per hour, it will have exited the body by the time you get there. Regardless, you should call 911 immediately.

Myth: Rubber tires will protect all people in a car from being harmed by lightning.

Fact: The rubber tires actually do little to nothing in terms of protecting passengers. It’s actually the metal frame of the car that provides protection.

General Rules for Staying Safe:

  • Use the 30/30 rule to find out if you need to seek shelter immediately.
  • Never touch concrete surfaces. Lightning can travel through metal wires in concrete walls and flooring.
  • Do not use corded phones or electrical devices that need to be plugged in.
  • Avoid bathing, doing laundry or anything else that requires water.
